AI Sampling
Artificial Intelligence | Online Workshop | English | Asia-Pacific
Description:
Key Words: Architectural Sampling,Deep Learning,3D,Discrete
Required Skills: Intermediate Grasshopper, Intermediate Rhino, beginner Python
Required Software: Rhino, Grasshopper
Required Hardware: PC or Mac
Maximum number of participating students: 15
This workshop continues the experimentation from last year’s ‘Discrete Sampling’ workshop in its use of deep neural networks for an end-to-end learning and generating of 3-dimensional forms. Framed as a hybrid design workflow, we will leverage on the probabilistic relations of discrete architectural forms and the high-dimensional feature representations of deep generative models. The theory of ‘Architectural Sampling’, which underlies the workshop's computational design framework, will be introduced to provide the foundational conceptual understanding needed for the hands-on design project investigations.

Instructors:
  • Immanuel Koh Singapore University of Technology & Design (SUTD), Assistant Professor
Immanuel holds a joint assistant professorship between the school of Architecture & Sustainable Design (ASD) and that of Design & Artificial Intelligence (DAI) at the Singapore University of Technology & Design (SUTD). He is the recipient of the Hokkien Foundation Chair Professorship for his AI research in architecture. He obtained his PhD at the École polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL), while doing transdisciplinary research between the School of Computer Sciences and Institute of Architecture. His doctoral thesis “Architectural Sampling” was nominated for the Best Thesis Prize and Lopez-Loreta Prize. Trained at the Architectural Association (AA) and Zaha Hadid Architects, Immanuel has exhibited at NeurIPS, Venice Biennale, V&A Museum, 3D Printing Museum (Shanghai) and Tittot Glass Art Museum; and published in Architectural Design (AD), Design Computing & Cognition, CAAD Futures, CAADRIA and Computational Design. He has taught at the AA, Royal College of Art, Tsinghua University, Strelka, Angewandte, Bauhaus Dessau, Harvard GSD, UCL Bartlett and many others. Immanuel is the co-founder of Neural Architecture Group (NAG) and co-curator of AIArchitects.org. His recent book 'Artificial & Architectural Intelligence in Design' (2020) is among the first to reflect on the epistemological implications of AI on architecture, and vice versa. He now directs Artificial-Architecture.
