DESIGN DATA

The DESIGN DATA workshop will introduce participants to computational data-driven processes related to the scale of the body, of a community, and of urbanism. Following an initial series of presentations, tutorials and discussions, this offering of the InclusiveFUTURES workshops will be structured as three parallel design exercises. Each of the three groups will be led by a NYIT-SoAD professor, coming together for shared presentations and discussions of the introduction, production and outcomes of the workshop. When selecting this workshop, please express your preference of which of the three exercises you wish to participate in.


BIG DATA + AI GANs IN-FORMED REALISM | Pablo Lorenzo-Eiroa with Tom Verebes

In this workshop group, survey is understood as a primary mode of design origination through Big Data 3d scanning. Spatial environments will be surveyed, analyzed, displaced and transformed, generating an informed realism. Three-dimensional representations of Big Data will be processed by implementing AI (Artificial Intelligence) through GANs (Generative Adversarial Networks).


DESIGN + HEALTH | Christian Pongratz with Tom Verebes

This group will discuss opportunities for innovation through design and explore new ground in three systemic contexts of resilience and community capacity-building: health, food systems and urban systems. The approach of Design + Health investigates the latent terrain of innovation as it spans circular design strategies from experience, services and products, in order to integrate all three ecosystems (health, food, urban) into a novel design method for resilience capacity building.


INFORMED URBAN SYSTEMS | Marcella Del Signore with Tom Verebes

Increased urbanization and connectivity have triggered greater capacities to mine data directly from the sociotechnical systems embedded into urban environments. We are immersed in an entangled ecology of ubiquitous communication infrastructures, from sensors, global positions systems, automated systems to locative media. This workshop group will provide an overview of the latent possibilities of data in urban systems through the application of a set of tools connected to urban analytics and dynamic mapping.

  • Tom Verebes NYIT, RIBA II,Professor
    Tom Verebes is a tenured Professor in the School of Architecture and Design at New York Institute of Technology NYIT. Co-founder of OCEAN in 1995, and Director of his practice, OCEAN CN. Former academic roles include: Co-Director of the AADRL at the AA in London; Director of AAVS Shanghai, AAVS Xixinan, and AAVS Shenzhen; Associate Dean at the Faculty of Architecture at University of Hong Kong; Associate Dean for Academic Affairs at NYIT, and visiting positions at University of Pennsylvania, Syracuse University, RPI, RMIT, University of Tokyo, and SUTD. Publications include books: ‘Masterplanning the Adaptive City: New Computational Urbanism in the Twenty-first Century” (Routledge, 2013); ‘Mass Customised Cities’ (AD, Wiley, 2015), Shanghai Ten Folio’ (AA Publications, ORO, 2017), ‘DRL X: A Design Research Compendium’ (AA Publications, 2008). His work has been exhibited in over 50 venues worldwide, and he has lectured extensively in Asia, Europe, North America, Africa, Australia, and the Middle East.
  • Marcella Del Signore New York Institute of Technology, School of Architecture and Design,Associate Professor; Director, MS. in Urban Design
    Marcella Del Signore is an architect, urbanist, educator, scholar, and the principal of X-Topia, a design-research practice that explores the intersection of architecture and urbanism with technology and the public, social and cultural realm. She is an Associate Professor and Director of the Master of Science in Architecture, Urban and Regional Design at the New York Institute of Technology, School of Architecture and Design. Her research focuses on interscalar design approaches that engage socio-technical systems through computation, prototyping, material and fabricated assemblies, data-driven protocols, and adaptive environments. She is the author of Urban Machines: Public Space in a Digital Culture (LISTLab, 2018; OROEditions, 2020) and the editor of Data, Matter, Design: Strategies in Computational Design (Routledge, 2020.) In 2018, she co-edited “Recalibration: On Imprecision and Infidelity” proceedings published during the 2018 ACADIA Conference, where she served as technical co-chair. In 2018, she co-curated the ‘Data & Matter’ exhibition at the ECC during the 2018 Architecture Venice Biennale, and she is currently invited to exhibit at the 17th Architecture Venice Biennale in 2021.
  • Pablo Lorenzo-Eiroa New York Institute of Technology, School of Architecture and Design,Director, MS in Architecture, Computational Technologies
    Pablo Lorenzo-Eiroa is an international architect and scholar in the fields of architecture, urbanism, ecology and computation currently tenured Associate Professor and the Director of the MS in Architecture, Computational Technologies program at The New York Institute of Technologies School of Architecture and Design. His work innovates in information-based representation and robotic systems aiming to displace the conventional parameters that define architecture. He is the design principal of e-Architects.net New York/Buenos Aires based on an emerging Architecture and Urbanism of Information. e-Architects develops software, information “mapping” and “visualizations” implementing Big Data and Artificial Intelligence for space-environments, including machines to “draw” and “build”, understanding them as proto-architectural. Lorenzo-Eiroa co-chaired ACADIA 2010 and has authored and co-edited five books, including: ‘Architecture In Formation’, Routledge/Taylor & Francis, London, 2013.

    Christian R Pongratz is fostering radical collaboration across disciplines in roles such as Professor of Architecture (SoAD), Senior Advisor to the Provost, as well as Interim Dean of the School of Interdisciplinary Studies and Education at New York Institute of Technology. In order to capture value as social impact through design, he now implements a Design + Health platform engaging communities, the College of Osteopathic Medicine and the School of Business, and integrating emerging industries from VR to Robotic Automation. Previously founding director of the M.S. specialization, Digital Design and Fabrication Program, and Professor of Architecture at Texas Tech University, he also taught at University of Texas at Austin and was visiting professor at Yeungjin Jr. College, Korea and the AA. In New York, he worked for Peter Eisenman and John Reimnitz, before he co-founded Pongratz Perbellini Architects, which is published widely and received among many international awards the segnalazione Compasso d’oro XXI for Hyperwave stone cladding. He studied Architecture at TUM and Sci-Arc, and is a licensed architect in Berlin, Germany. He co-authored (with Perbellini M.) and designed the monograph “Peter Eisenman”, and the books on “Natural born CaaDesigners”, “Cyberstone”, "Digital Media for Design", and "Digital Design and Fabrication", and "Urban Stage"(with White D.).
