Hierarchical Modularity and Growability in Space Architecture

As a progression of the previous workshop last year, this year we investigate the potentials of hierarchical aggregation of thousands of modules by multiagent simulation with layered internal clocks and behaviors in the context of space architecture construction with the following hypothetical constraints.

1) Modules are fabricated off site and shipped by spaceships.
2) Modules are unloaded at limited access points on site.
3) Unloaded modules move along other existing modules.
4) Modules reach end points of existing modules and connect to them.

To satisfy those constraints, modules don’t only form spaces and structures but also need to function as a growable logistic network. In this workshop we don’t focus on engineering feasibility or aesthetics of space science fiction but on emergence of unconventional or hopefully novel complex formations by the bottom-up multi-agent system which differ from formations of human artifacts, nature on earth or existing science fictions.

The workshop starts with introductory lecture of computational design and then the tutorial sessions of multi-agent algorithm with layered internal clock (Clock Stack Algorithm) on Processing and iGeo follow (http://igeo.jp/tutorial/60.html).
Then, students work on development of their own aggregation algorithm on Processing, design of modules on Rhinoceros and production of simulation animations and rendering images for the final presentation. Assignments are given to the participants during the tutorial sessions and participants are expected to work on assignments and their design projects outside of the workshop session time.

Most of the classes are going to be livestreamed on YouTube. Auditors are welcomed to join there.

Instructors:
  • Satoru Sugihara ATLV,Principal
    Satoru Sugihara is a principal and founder at the computational design studio ATLV founded in 2012. Prior to starting his firm, he worked as a computational designer at Morphosis Architects for five years. He also worked at DR_D and Greg Lynn FORM as an architectural designer. He taught computational design seminars at SCI-Arc from 2011 - 2017. Satoru Sugihara received the M.S. in computer science from Tokyo Institute of Technology in 2001 and the M.Arch. from the University of California, Los Angeles in 2006. He was the recipient of Best Paper Award in ACADIA conference 2014. He had his solo exhibition “Agent-Based Computational Design” at AA[n+1] gallery in Paris in 2015. He also publishes open source computational design software iGeo to contribute to the computational design industry and education.
