Required Skills: Basic knowledge of Rhino 3d, Grasshopper(Basic) , experience with 3d printing is appreciated not mandatory.
Required Software: Rhinoceros - 5/6 , Grasshopper.
Required Hardware: Computer or Laptop that can comfortably run Rhino 5 or 6 , Optional : RepRap type desktop 3d printer.

Leaving behind the standardized construction strategies and seeking unique solutions increases the need for understanding embedded machine constraints and establishing new methods for digital production. The workshop is set as an inquiry into the larger research framework of computational tools to inform digital fabrication.

During the workshop, participants will engage in (1)Understanding past and current practices with cartesian 3d printers and material behaviors (2) Understand future trajectories in the field of additive manufacturing (3) Establish a new language of engagement with machines by hacking the conventional/predefined workflows. In doing so the intrinsic constraints of 3D printers are used as opportunities or drivers in the toolpath designing process.

While it is highly encouraged for participants to have a basic understanding of Grasshopper, the workshop will cover fundamentals of computational thinking in Grasshopper on Day 01, to create a strong base for the subsequent exercises in the workshop. Each day has been carefully planned to encourage participants in asking emerging questions with DIY-enabled printers and various printing methods. Exercises have been formulated to allow for both Digital as well as hands-on engagement with 3D printing. Tutors will guide the participants at each stage and a team of volunteers will provide 3D printing facilities for a hybrid model of learning, especially for participants who do not currently have access to printing facilities. The workshop is open to highly motivated students from allied fields of design, young practicing architects, 3D printing enthusiasts, and hobbyists.

  • Bhavleen kaur BSSA,NMIMS,Assistant Professor
    Bhavleen Kaur Narula is a computational designer, creative technologist, and educator. Trained as an architect, her work explores the multiplicities in the field of computational design and architectural education. She specializes in additive manufacturing and multiple digital fabrication techniques. She is currently pursuing her Mention in Research from ELISAVA and holds an academic position as an Assistant Professor at Balwant Sheth School of Architecture, Mumbai, where she is actively involved in developing digital pedagogies for both graduates and postgraduate programs. After receiving her Masters in Advanced Design and Digital Architecture at ELISAVA in 2015, she collaborated with several offices in the design of installations, sculptures, and pavilions - including the installation at the exhibition ‘When is Space?’ with studio sP+a, Mumbai. She has been part of several national & international symposiums & workshops with the School of Environment & Architecture, Nuru Karim Design studio, Mumbai & ELISAVA 's Masters in Ephemeral Architecture & Temporary Space-Barcelona, to name a few. She was also part of the Digital Futures Young Talk on Computational Design in Sept 2020.
  • Sujay Kumarji SK Design Studio,Architect
    Sujay is an architect and technologist practicing in Mumbai. He graduated with a Masters in Robotics and Advanced construction from IAAC, Barcelona and is currently practicing as a robotic fabrication consultant. He is presently exploring with the possibilities of additive manufacturing, particularly concrete printing and its applications within architecture.
