The workshop Architectural Intelligence explores the generative and creative potential of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the notion of human-machine collaboration. More precisely the aim is to investigate how to sample artistic influences from design-related fields such as fashion, media art, sculpture, and painting onto architectural objects with Machine Learning (ML) algorithms. In this process, the human curates the artistic influences while the machine (AI) generates novel depictions of objects and architecture in the style of the artistic precedent. In this symbiotic relationship between the human and the machine, we are concerned about the role of the designer, the notion of authorship, and the impact of AI on design. As part of the brief, students learn the fundamentals of ML-based style transfer, 3D modeling, and animated textures. Additionally, the workshop investigates the potential of real-time interaction and visualization techniques through the use of game engines such as Unity. The workshop is divided into a series of technical tutorials, lectures, and design reviews leading to a final project.

  • Benjamin Ennemoser UCLA,Lecturer
    Benjamin Ennemoser is an architect and researcher based in Los Angeles, California. He studied architecture at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna and the University of Innsbruck where he graduated with distinction. He has received several research fellowships, such as the Tische-Stipendium, the prestigious Dr. Otto Seibert-Stipendien-Schenkung, and the Start-Grant. He has been a lecturer at UCLA AUD’s since 2016, and he has also taught at the University of Innsbruck, the University of Applied Arts in Vienna, the University of Fine Arts in Vienna and Yun-Tech University in Taiwan. As an architect and researcher, Ennemoser’s work is situated within the field of advanced technology as design speculation. His focus is on computational design, digital fabrication, applied robotics, soft robotics, VR & AR, new media, machine learning, interactive architectural systems, and digital experience design. He has published and presented his research on machine learning in architecture in international journals and academic institutions. In addition, he has worked for a number of architecture practices, such as Google R&D, New-Territories, Gensler, and GraftLab. He is a licensed architect in the European Union where he founded his own practice, Benjamin Ennemoser Design, in 2016.
  • Guvenc Ozel UCLA,Lead Lecturer
    Güvenç Özel is a cyberphysical architect and critical technologist. He is a lead faculty member of IDEAS, a multidisciplinary research and development platform in UCLA, and the principal of Ozel Office, an interdisciplinary design practice located in Los Angeles. His work focuses on how technology and media shapes contemporary social relationships and environments. His recent projects, ranging from large scale 3D printing to VR installations, were featured by CNN, BBC, Euronews, Los Angeles Times, Boston Globe, Huffington Post, Architectural Digest, Wired, Gizmodo, Creators Project/ Vice, Dwell and Designboom among others. His projects have been exhibited in venues such as Istanbul Modern, Saatchi Gallery London, Sundance Film Festival and SXSW. Ozel’s research, which is supported by leading tech companies Google, Autodesk, Microsoft, Oculus and others, uses artificial intelligence, interactive sensor systems, robotics and XR to create reactive experiences and environments that are synchronized and responsive to human presence and senses.
