Structural parametric engineering with Karamba & generative design and design optimization with Octopus on the example of bridges, by the developers of the plugins.

A focus will be in result visualization for a better understanding of the structural model.

Advanced topic will be different optimization strategies and the use of CPPNs Compositional Pattern Producing Networks with Octopus, for the evolution of structural patterns.

  • Robert Vierlinger Bollinger+Grohmann,PM, GM
    Trained in Engineering at TU Vienna and TU Delft, studied Architecture at the University of Applied Arts Vienna at studio Hani Rashid, worked there as scientific staff for 5 years, finishing the PhD thesis about Octopus right now (make use of the time ;)). At Bollinger+Grohmann B+G since 10 years, responsible for the China sector, GM of B+G Shanghai which is in foundation. Member of the Karamba team at B+G from the start, Karamba is why I joined B+G. Octopus was originally my master thesis, its further development and the research consequences like machine learning representation techniques are my PhD thesis.

    Klaas De Rycke is a Belgian civil engineer, and architect graduated from the University of Ghent in 2003. He is a senior lecturer at the Architecture School of Versailles (Ensa-V, France) and UCL Bartlett and a researcher. Klaas joined Bollinger+Grohmann in 2003. As a partner at Bollinger+Grohmann Holding AG, Klaas heads the offices in Paris and Brussels that are specialized in complex structures, facade and parametric design. Regularly solicited to work on morphologically complex projects, he had the chance to work on buildings like the Louvre Lens designed by SANAA or Piazza Garibaldi in Naples by Dominique Perrault, among many others. Klaas’ fields of expertise are the structural and manufacturing optimizations through mathematical and complex numerical approaches. He is working on the use and implication on design of AI and machine learning in numerical calculations coupled with the use and implication of genetic algorithms in structural and architectural approaches and their carbon impact. He is also a specialist on complex façade engineering. He gathered and used his expertise in multiple international projects.
  • Clemens Preisinger University of Applied Arts Vienna,Senior Scientist
    Clemens Preisinger has been employed at Bollinger und Grohmann ZT GmbH since February 2008. Since 2010 Clemens Preisinger has been developing the parametric interactive finite- element program 'Karamba3D'. In the course of his professional career he has acquired profound knowledge regarding the development and application of algorithmic procedures in the field of civil engineering. This includes not only non-linear FE (Finite Element) analysis but also structural optimization and computer-based generation of structural geometries.
